The title of the project was made to best describe its aim and did
not inspire to a good acronym. The nickname SONATA was therefore
constructed by combining the latin words son (sound) and
natura (nature) with a flavour of fine music, three
important aspects in the project.
SONATA aims to make a contribution to the understanding of which aspects of the sound are important for perceived naturalness in speech and music by supplying metrics to quantify the naturalness. The pluridisciplinary research will be based on psychoacoustic and neuroscientific experiments together with sound synthesis and signal processing. Metrics for perception of naturalness are envisaged to contribute to the development of natural speech synthesis while it is hoped that other fields should profit from this knowledge, such as telecommunication, digital musical instruments, and hearing-aid technology. |
