The Citadel is located on the top of a small hill in a remote part of this world's Underdark. A small village is located at the foot of the hill, where a number of minor drow houses (about 500 drow total, plus a few thousand slaves) try to get on with their lives, such as they are. A large number of spiders can be found in the vicinity of, and inside of, the Citadel proper. The drow retainers of Blessed of Selvetarm, Zen of Noquar, can be found in the Citadel at any given time, as well as a smattering of hobgoblin retainers of the hobgoblin druid.
Though most of the spiders are harmless, a few aren't. Most of the spiders are the size of a hand (roughly the size of a large tarantula), but one or two spiders the size of rothe (roughly the size of a small pony) have been seen. As the drow have a particular affinity for spiders, the spiders coexist peacefully (mostly) with the inhabitants of the cavern.
A small drow village numbering some 200 individuals sit at the foot of the Citadel of Mirrors, providing food and other services to the inhabitants of the Citadel. The drow village is ruled by a circle of elders, chosen from the inhabitants of the village itself, and number seven. Though several of the drow in the village are branded as outcasts from various drow cities (so marked by the sigil-shaped scar burned into their foreheads), no obvious bias either way (outcast or non-outcast) has been noticed so far in the village.
There's a possible love interest going on between the commander (colonel) of the drow garrison at the citadel and the chief elder of the circle of elders at the village. Keeping with drow kinkiness, both are male, of course.
History:
None of the player characters are particularly skilled in history or any other
skills that could tell them something of the story of the Citadel of Mirrors,
so its history remains unknown - for now. In fact, the drow only assumed control
of the citadel about two years ago, when it was found to be (largely) unoccupied.
Memorable incidents:
The Duergar Chieftain: When the duergar chieftain adressed the drow
during the incident where the duergar enlisted the drows' help in determining
the fate of Silverhall, he greeted them as Mirrorlords. Whether it was
the usual groveling, kowtowing, and catering to humongous egos that is wise
when dealing with drow and dragons, or whether it actually held some
significance beyond that, is unknown - for now.
The Reading Spider: One of the drow wizards caught sight of a large spider
when he returned to his study. The spider was apparently reading in one of his
tomes. The drow wizard thought it looked decidedly sheepish as it skittered
away, climbing up the chimney of the study's fireplace. The off-hand comment
of the drow wizard was: "That spider needs some killing. It's too smart for
its own good." The spider was later glimpsed, yet again reading in one of
the wizards' tomes. The wizard could swear that the spider was wearing
a weird pair of glasses...
The largest drow city in the vicinity of the Citadel of Mirrors
Something of a Mos Eisley, this is actually the last outpost of "civilized" Underdark, making the Citadel of Mirrors some distance out in the "wild" Underdark. Mostly a trading outpost, Demonskull Gate has a remarkably well-stocked bazaar and market - though the duergar run the place, many other strange races have been seen here. As well as the occasional halfling.
The largest duergar city in the Rocksteady fief of the Kingdom of the Anvil, Thorbarkel weighs in at about 500 000 duergar, and about 8 000 "others" at any given time.
