TAXI
http://www.taxi.com
TAXI
is a service that helps musicians get their music to the right
people and to improve at their craft. Every two weeks, members receive
listings of song and artist requests from labels, librarys,
publishers, etc. If you have material that you think fits a listing,
you submit it. TAXI screeners listen to everything that comes in
(they have a link to "a&r staff" on their sight to see what kind
of
credits these screeners have). Cuts that are judgedsuitable for each
listing are forwarded as solicited material. The rest are returned to
their owners with a critique. (These have been VERY helpfull!)

Piano Patch (4 diskettes):
http://www.paxtani.com/triton/piano.htm
I think
the Wide L/R piano and the
Acoustic Piano (A001) in programs sounds good.
Try
tweaking the EG intensity (button 3, row 1) for the acoustic
piano patch. Makes it sound much better.
[Menergy
Note: This sounds more like a piano than Triton built-in
pianos. However, not realistic enough to meet my standards.]
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Ultimate Piano Collection from East-West Sounds:
http://www.soundsonline.com
This
$180 piano CD collection is very nice when you play it on AKAI
samplers but it sounds very poor on Triton. Each multi-sampled
instrument uses different layered multisamples for pianissimo,
fortissimo, marcato, sustained, soft, loud and different embedded
velocity parms. Triton uses those instruments in simple form and
you must create your own simple velocity switched program.
Using
this sample collection with the Triton is difficult since
implementing the multisampled velocity-switched layers is difficult.
It can be done, but it is tedious to construct the layers. Assigning
the velocity switching is not to bad, but takes some tweaking. This
CD-ROM works well in Gigastudio, though.

Choir samples
http://korgsupport.gg.st
---------------------------------------------------------------------
For classical choir samples nothing beats Spectrasonics
"Symphony of Voices" (about $500):
http://www.ilio.com
A reasonable
alternative is "Classical Choir" from East West:
http://www.soundsonline.com
For
world/chant vocals check out "Spiritual Voices" again from
East West. Also highly recommended is the "Sound Clips 12,000" from
Masterbits:
http://www.masterbits.com
Which
has about 12,000 samples in a wide range of styles, including
some cool classical and world vocals/vocal fx for about $50!!!
A super value!!! They also have a vocal collection called
"Add lips" but this has few choirs and more ready to go
"performances".
Finally,
soon to be released is the long awaited "Vocal Planet"
from Spectrasonics (again check http://www.ilio.com).
This will cost about $400 and includes gospel choirs, R&B vocals,
chants and much more!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sound Site:
http://thesoundsite.ismi.net/
They
have over 1300 samples.
These samples and banks are in soundfont format
(the format used by EMU and SoundBlaster Live).
Using
Awave Studio from FMJ Software:
http://www.fmjsoft.com/
I have
been able to translate these sondfonts into AKAI (mapped) or
.wav (unmapped) formats.
If
you want to get your hands on killer piano samples, they have
some Steinway samples approaching 30 meg in size.
They
have a "Fluid Release" sound bank that is 121.5 meg in size and
sounds amazing.
---
Please note that the majority of these samples are copyrighted.
You cant just use Awave to convert this data as suggested to Triton
format. Awave will not display the copyright information embedded
in to these files. Only SoundBlaster cards that support SF2 will
display this information. So be very careful what you use in your
sequences if you intend to use these files.

Q:
From samplenet.com ( http://www.samplenet.co.uk ???)
I downloaded piano samples from a Kurzweil,
though they are simply WAV files.
I have no experience with trying this, but, the Triton Parameter
Guide says it'll load a WAV as a sample file.
After loading one of the samples it does not appear to be
accessible through the Triton? Is there a trick to it?
A:
WAV samples are just the primitive waveforms and not a Triton
ready multi-sample. You must create a multi-sample from those wav and
then a new Triton program using this RAM based multi-sample as OSC.
Read sampling guides in Triton's manual.
=====================================================================
Q:
I have my sequence completed but need to go back and change tempo
in a few bars in the middle of the song, then resume the initial
tempo setting. Can this be done?
A:
Set the Tempo Mode to Auto. (Only Auto mode reads tempo from the
Master Track. So if you recorded tempo changes earlier they are not
being read if you have the Tempo Mode to Manual). Now you can either
record tempo changes in real time or by event edits.
Select
Master Track from Track menu,
go to Event Edit page,
scroll to the measure where you want to put a tempo change,
INSERT tempo change event.
Save the song, you are all set.
=====================================================================
Q:
I have several drum kit sounds (kicks,snares..etc)
that I've put on a floppy disk. They are wav format sounds.
I want
to load them up into the Triton, map them out on the
keyboard, and use them in sequencer mode.
So
far, I've been able to see my sounds in Disk mode and I then
loaded the sounds.
Now
what? I can't seem to play/find my sounds anywhere.
I tried to look for them inside of RAM and ROM multi-samples in
a program, but no luck.
A:
The quickest way is to access those samples in a drum kit.
Select a Drums program in Prog Mode. (let's say Standard kit)
Press
the GLOBAL mode button.
Press MENU button.
Select Drum Kits page on screen.
Select a key on keyboard where you want to put your sample.
Now Press and HOLD the ENTER Key AND press the same Key on the
keyboard. This will take you to that key for editing.
On
screen you should see on top:
GLOBAL P5: Drum Kit Sample Setup KEY should say which key you have
selected. You should see two sections HIGH Drumsample and
LOW Drumsample (TRTION lets you layer two drumsamples and velocity
switch). Under each section, you will see a drop down list says
"ROM", if you click on the button, a small menu pops up. Select RAM.
Then on the line below that, you should select which sample you
want to assign to this key.
Play
with other parameters, like level, filter, transpose, etc.,
if you need to.
Repeat the steps for all samples you want to use.
Save the drumkit. (Press REC/WRITE Button)
Now
if you select the Standard Kit in SEQUENCER,
you will have your samples on the keys you assigned them.
You
should also download the User Guide (not provided with TRITON),
and print it. And keep it right next to TRITON.
It's the best guide you will find for any synth. Available at:
http://www.tapesh.com/triton/userguide.pdf
=====================================================================
Q:
I've installed a MOSS board, and it sounds fine in COMBI and PROG
mode. However, I can't seem to audition the sounds in SEQ mode.
Is there something obvious I'm doing wrong?
A:
In SEQ mode, the MOSS sounds are defaulted (I think) to the 1st
track. What you need to do is, go to Menu > Zone/ctrl (Not on my
Triton, so I'm not sure what it reads on display) and then go to the
tab at the bottom that says something like, MOSS1-8, MOSS9-16.
Whichever
track you plan on using a MOSS prog needs to be adjusted
here. For instance, If you're using a MOSS prog on track 5, then
go to MOSS 1-8 and at track "5" assign the number of voices (you can
assign a total of 6, but you can split it up on more than one track).
This should clear up your problem, provided you can interpret what I
just wrote.
=====================================================================
Q:
Where does the sounds located on my new PCM cards show up in the
Triton?
A:
Nowhere, initially. The accompanying floppy disk has an identical
"bank c" and "bank d" patch set that will automatically
use those
banks when loaded. However, you may freely mix and match sounds from
different banks (in fact, you should, if you rely heavily on factory
sounds).
Another
possibility is to load those programs into bank E (empty from
factory, reserved for sample use) if you don't want to sample
yourself. Or to have all patches available at once when compiling
your own "superset" (or "supersets" for different occasions).
This
[the above] is actually not altogether correct.
When you place a PCM card into one of the 2 PCM expansion slots
in the Triton, those raw waveforms show up inside the Triton ready
to use - go to Program Edit - Page 1 to the OSC tab. Next to the
waveform name it says "ROM" - if you change that you get RAM and
then the expansion boards as places to select what waveform you want
to use. If you want to really have fun, select different programs,
hit edit and change the waveform to something from the Expansion
cards, you can take a slap bass program (for example) and make some
really kick ass new sounds that you "made".
The
Program disk comes with a "bank load" of 127 new
programs/combinations, drum kits, arpeggiators and even demo
sequences. You can choose to delete the programs in the C bank or
the D bank. The way we did the factory voicing followed these
rules:
- Combinations
in the A/B bank only use A/B programs
- Combinations in the C bank only use A/B/C programs
- Combinations in the D bank only use A/B/D programs
This
way, you can delete the C or D bank and not "break" any of
the other banks.

Q: RAM Upgrade Specs
A:
- 16mB or 32mB,
- 72 pin non-parity single sided.
SIMM modules that are either Fast Page or EDO compatible
(or parity as long as all chips are identical)
- with an access speed of 60mSec or faster.

Q:
Vocoder doesn't work in programs. It only works in the vocoder
factory programs of bank E. What's the problem?, I tried all the
configurations posible in my Triton but nothing works.
A:
If you do not set the Amp1 Level Pan on page 4 to L000 it just
wont work. If the PCG sound your using is a Double OSC you will have
to set the Amp 2 Level Pan to L000.
Refer
to the Parameter manual under Vocoder. All the settings you
need to change are clearly stated there.

Q:
Why is it when I start Cakewalk, my Triton stutters really
quick then gets in sync (sometimes it doesn't get in sync)?
A:
Leave one measure blank at the beggining of the sequence,
and it will be fine.
=====================================================================
Q:
How to make Triton have smoother transistions in between
sequences. When I put each song in the cue list, do I have to
convert them to its own song to make I play smoothly.
A:
It's not possible to eliminate the gap completely. This is due to
reset commands TRITON sends after loading the new song.
To minimize the delay, make sure your effects are exactly same in all
songs in the cue list.
Another
work-around is to convert the cue list into a song. In
Sequence mode, open a new song, then go back into the cue list,
push the tab on the screen and convert that cue list to the song
you just opened. Now play your song in the sequence you opened for
the cue list.

Q:
I am trying to get that R&B and Hip Hop quantization feel that the
MPC has while using the Triton. Does anyone have some tips to try
with drums to achieve this type of groove feel?
A:
Tips that work for me:
- triplet or straight notes;
- reduce intensity (50-70%) depending on how good timing you have;
- different quantization for different keys (in a drum-groove)
The Triton doesn't have groove quantize.
Another
secret for getting good Hip Hop and Dance beats is to use the
arpeggiator function in global. You can see what your beats sound
like in real time so if something sounds off you can easily adjust,
this method proves best for creating drum patterns.

Q:
I really like one of the sounds, but its part of a COMBI.
I cannot find it on its own. It doesn't seem to be a sound in
any of the banks?
A:
Combis are combinations of programs. Try editing it and find its
components and fx settings. To see the 8 prog sounds that are used
in a combi, just go into the mixer section.
=====================================================================
Q:
When I use programs in sequencer mode, the effects that are
normally associated with them (in performance mode) are no longer
there, and the sounds are completely dry. Is there a way to get
these effects to transfer over into the sequencer mode?
A:
Go to page "Insert Effect" in sequencer mode and from the
upper-right corner menu select "Copy insert effect".
This function copies program IFX to the destination track.
Do the same on "Master Effect" sequencer page.
=====================================================================
Q:
Can I only have 1 combi on channel 1 and that's it or is it
possible to have more? Also With the triton keyboard, can one
sequence more than one combi per track?
A:
When you sequence you are copying the combi into the sequencer
and they then become tracks. While each combination varies in the
number of tracks that it uses (and watch out for "dummy" tracks that
the appegiator uses to generate notes while recording), there is a
maximum of eight programs that can be assigned. As the sequencer can
do up to 16 tracks, probably the least you would be able to do is 2
combis and if you have ones that use fewer tracks then more. Keep in
mind, however, that each combination uses effects as well so if you
want to copy multiple programs in as combis you will need to figure
out how best to use the effects, and potentially will have to work
around them if you need more than five-two
(insert-master) effects total.

Q:
I would like to have snare, kick, hats on different track, but
I have trouble activating more than 1 track for drums.
I believe I read somewhere that you can apply effects separately
to different parts of drums sets within a track?
A:
Any of the 16 sequencer tracks can be set to any program. Drums
included.
Yes
you can but it's a bit involved. On the Insert FX Routing page,
set the send assignment of a drum track to Dkit (this ONLY works
if you first set THAT timbre to a drum kit program). Many of the
drum kits are set up where the Snare sounds are assigned to
Insert 2 while Kicks are assigned to Insert 1. If you want to
change this, go to Global mode and look at the drum kit you want
to edit (hold enter and play a note to call up the correct Note
information for the sound you want to check) - go to the
"Voice Mixer" page and at the Right you'll see what the current
insert assignment is for that note. Each drum can be assigned to
any of the 5 available insert effects - but you'll need to program
it (and SAVE it before turning off power) to do this. It's actually
easier to simply use a different Sequencer track and assign it
to a different Insert effect for the whole kit for drums with
different effects on them.
A:
I assume you are making a song in the seqencer, right? If so,
then you can just use (for example) track #1 for your kick drum,
track #2 for your snare, and track #3 for hi-hat or whatever,
etc. Just record them one by one. Then it's also easy to apply
different effects to the different drums, since each one has its
own track.Anyway, that's how I do it. Maybe you want to be able
to play the whole drum part in at once, and have it go to
different tracks automatically.
But
here is a workaround that i use sometimes: Record the whole
drum part to one track. then copy that track to 2 new (empty)
tracks. Then use Shift/Erase Note to erase the parts you don't
want on each track.

Q1:
Is there a way to record vocals to the Triton? I have a
Mackie 1604 that I'm using to run the Triton thru. My Triton
contains 64MB of RAM just in case I'll have to sample the vocals.
The mic that I have is pretty good but I only need the vocals
recorded for the purpose of rough type demo (preproduction).
A1:
It is really easy to record vocals to the Triton, or if you want
through the Triton. First switch the button on the back of the
Triton (near the inputs)to mic mode, then connect a microphone
to one input then go to the sampling mode/page 0/input setup and
select where you want to route the microphone out and the level
and the pan of the input. What is left if you want to sample your
voice is that you have to press rec/write button and see in the
recording levels are causing an overload( if that happens in the
back of the Triton is a little level button that controls the
input levels, turn it until thre is not an overload and when you
are ready press start/stop and start to sing. You can pass your
vocal through the effects of the Triton if you want. Go to the
global mode/page0/audio input, adjust the level the pan and
through what effect you want to pass the vocals and it is ready.
Q2:
How do you create a low voice like a computer voice on the Triton
using a mic? Also, how do you by pass it to the computer so you
don't have to use up the memory on the triton and instead record
on the computer ?
A2:
It is really easy to do that. First, you have to do all the
process that I explained in my A1 answer above. Then you have
to choose a patch that sounds very robotic (the patches that
came in Bank E with the Triton are good enough) or if you want
you can make your own patch. The most important thing is that the
attack of the oscilator has to be very high and fast so that when
you talk the effect occurs fast. The waves that you select for
your patch are not so important. It depends in what you want (I
use guitar waves and I have really great results). Another thing
that you could do is to play with the pitch. Then if you want to
route the effect through a computer you have to route the out of
the effect (in page8/insert effect) to the output that is
connected to the computer. If you want, you can put effects to
the Vocoder, just make a chain of effects with the vocoder and
route the last effect to your computer.
You
may also want to consider using the ribbon or joystick
controller to play with the envelope.

Q:
When I create a drum pattern I would like to create the next
pattern while listening to the first pattern (drum pattern). Say
I create a nice drum pattern and I want to create a bass line
with it. How do I create the bass pattern and listen to the drum
pattern at the same time so I know that the bass line will fit
with the drums?
A1:
Check out the User's manual available at the front page of the
Triton Central site. This can be done in several ways.
A2:
Make all your patterns, i.e., drums, bass, keys, etc., in the
SEQEUNCER main page, not in pattern mode. When you have all of
them ready, you can go to pattern page and use "Get from Track"
function to copy the all patterns from tracks one by one. Then
you can assign them to keys. For example, record a 8 measure
long pattern for drums. them loop all tracks from 1 to 8.
Goto the second track, record the bass pattern. Keep recording
all patterns on different tracks. Then follow the instructions
for making a pattern out of a track in sequencer.

Q: I hear a low-frequency buzz from all the outputs of my Triton.
A:
You may have a "ground loop". Try putting an adaptor
on your AC plug that by-passes the ground plug
(it makes the AC plug have two connectors instead of three).

Q:
Has anyone found a way to change the configurations of the FX on
the fly? I'm using an external sequencer. Is it via SySex/PG change?
Also, is there a way to +/- the amount of the same FX to different
sequencer tracks?
A:
Whenever you make a change to a Program or Combination, the
Triton sends out the appropriate sorresponding SYSEX Message. You
can record these messages into any external sequencer. One
Important Note - I've found that, in order for this to work, you must
also record the process of changing screens. Example: Say you want to
change IFX1's Wet/Dry Ratio from 10:90 to 50:50. First record the
Sysex message the triton sends when you hit <menu>, then <P8>
onscreen. Then record the sysex message the triton sends after you
select IFX1's wet/dry ratio, and punch <5>,<0>,<enter>. I'm
not sure
if you need to have enable exclusive checked in the
Global:P1 MIDI menu, but definitely make sure your sequencer isn't set
to filter SYSEX messages.
This
will not work in SEQ mode. TRITON doesn't send/record/respond to
Sysex in SEQ mode
=====================================================================
Q:
I can't figure out how to transpose downloaded midi files.
Ideally, a global transpose would be great if it's possible .
A:
Go to sequencer mode, and on page 2 (Track Param)select Pitch
1-8 and 9-16 from the bottom of the screen. You have to set the
Transpose Value for each track in each song from here. Don't
Transpose the DRUM Track. When you have the song sounding the way you
want. Save it back to disk as a SNG file.
If
you dont want to have to save your files as SNG files. Then you
will have to transpose the song a different way. Go to page 5 in the
sequencer mode. Using the drop down menu from the right top of the
screen. Use the Shift/Erase Note Command. You will have to shift note
for each track. "BUT NOT THE DRUM TRACK". Also dont forget to set
your
start and end point for the measures you wish to shift. For you this
will be the start of the song and the end of the song.
Now you can save your song as a MIDI file.
=====================================================================
Q:
So basically in Sequencing mode I gotta set the effects in each
track, but it Program mode the effects dont carry over?
A:
In sequence mode, you can "copy efx" from any program. Its fast
and easy.
In
SEQ mode, press MENU, then press insert efx. At top left of page,
press tab. Then select "copy insert efx" select. Then pick the
program you want to copy efx from.
Do
the same again. Press menu, select master fx, press upper right tab,
select copy master efx from the program you want to copy from.
Then
got to insert efx, select routing 1-9 at bottom,
then assign track one to INSERT fx1.
Boom! There are your effects.
=====================================================================
Sequencer
Tip:
I remember thinking I couldn't record two or more combos in sequence
mode. You can't but there is a way around it. All you have to do is
go to combo mode look at the instruments then go to sequence and
select all the instruments on different tracks. Go to insert effects
then select the combo effects for which you desire then master effects
and do the same thing. After that record your melody then copy that
melody to the rest of the trcks for your combo and your set you can get
the same phat sounds from combo in sequence! This will be best with
like serene strings and all the combos that are not split into
sections on the keyboard enjoy.

Q:
I've been doing more and more with Triton-and-Cakewalk recently.
I noticed that the Triton only has 16 Song Templates (or Template
Songs, if you wanna call them by their "proper" name). I've been
using them to store my effects setups for when I use Cakewalk as a
sequencer.
For
instance, let's say I'm working on a song in Cakewalk (or Cubase
for that matter) called "Whatever". I setup the Triton's effects
how I want them (which I still don't know how to do from Cakewalk),
and then Rename Song (on Triton) to "Whatever" and then save it as
a song template.
16
songs later (each with its own effects setup), I'm in trouble,
because there are no more template slots left on the Triton.
So here's my question.... How do I get around this limitation?
Should
I be saving the "songs" (not really songs according to the
Triton, since the sequences are stored in cakewalk and only the
effects are what matter on the Triton) as normal (empty) songs, to
floppy?
Or,
should I stop using Seq mode and switch to Combi mode when i'm
using Cakewalk? Does this still give me 5 insert effects and 2
master effects? I would only get 8 MIDI tracks (one per
timbre/voice or whatever they're called) instead of 16, but I would
be able to save a LOT more of them to internal memory.
Or,
is there an easy way to get Cakewalk to store the Triton's
effects setup for me? I haven't tried to do it in SYSX yet.
A:
I hope my situation will be the answer for you!
I use CakeWalk too. You'll have to use SysEX.
Add
this line to your cakewalk.ini file,
where the SysEX devices/commands are listed:
Korg Triton Sequencer Dump=F0 42 3g 50 18 00 F7
(the
g in "3g" can be replaced by 0, because Cakewalk doesn't
recgnize the g)
When
you have your song, called "Whatever", in Cakewalk, go to View,
SysEx, Receive, and then select the SysEX dump we've just configured.
(the Korg Sequence shit) Then the Triton will get the SysEX request
and will send all the Sequence info to CakeWalk. Save your song, and
next time send the SysEX data back to your Triton.
