'Gladiator' Music Video
All images and video clips: © 2000 DreamWorks & Universal Studios
This music video features about 250 shots from the movie, presented in a somewhat narrative form. The video is not necessarily representative of my overall perception of the movie. Two-thirds of the 6 minute video has been devoted to the opening battle and the gladiator fights, underscored by Hans Zimmer's "The Battle" and "Barbarian Horde" from the score CD.
The remaining part is more poetic and peaceful, accompanied by Lisa Gerrard's haunting voice in "Now We Are Free". 'Gladiator' features so many aesthetically stunning shots that I wanted to include some of them in the last portion of the video. For more details, please read the notes at the bottom of this page.
This video has been encoded in MPEG-4 format. You need to download and install a MPEG-4 or DivX 4.0+ codec in order to play back the video in Windows Media Player (available for both Microsoft Windows and Mac OS).

Additional Notes
- The video features two outtakes (not seen in the director's cut): A scene in which Hagen impales another gladiator, and a scene in which an 'executioner' slams the head of a fallen gladiator with a club. The first scene was cut from the theatrical release to meet MPAA's R-rating. Each shot has been edited down to about one second.
- Unfortunately, I had to leave out many key scenes and plenty of aesthetic shots in order to keep down the running time (and the filesize). I also left out many (aesthetically) magnificent shots from the Bonus section of the GLADIATOR DVD because of the poor technical quality.
- Many action scenes in the video have been closely matched to the score, because there are no sound effects to heighten the dramatic impact. Consequently, the musical 'accents' partly serves as a substitute for the sound effects.
- "The Battle", "Barbarian Horde" and "Now We Are Free" would obviously not fit into a 6 minute video, so portions from each track have been selected and crossmixed for smoother transitions.
- The music have been encoded in IMA format, because the video editor doesn't support MP3-format. A higher quality, stereo MP3 soundtrack, as opposed to the 7.5 MB IMA mono soundtrack, would consume about 5.5 MB.
