Things I do with my spare time

My first and greatest love must be literature. I practically grew up in a library, learning to read by age four. I haven't stopped yet. Most of the books I read could probably be called "science fiction", but I read a lot of other things as well.

I have wasted time in front of computers on a regular basis ever since we got a VIC-20 in 1983. Since then, I have lived with a Commodore 64 (since 1984), an Amiga (since 1987), and various PCs (since 1990); since 1992 I've been a student and therefore had free internet access (and learning to live with UNIX). I program for a living, so that's no fun anymore.

In later years, I've wasted less time on computer games (although I'm still liable to spend a weekend on Civilization), and rather wasted more time on board games and roleplaying games, both of which involve playing with other people instead of sitting alone at the computer. That way, competitive games become more challenging (since humans are far smarter and more unpredictable than a computer opponent), and all games become more social events. In general, I prefer roleplaying games to board games, although I do appreciate both types of game.

As with all forms of organized religion, I am principally opposed to organized sports, team sports, and spectator sports. However, I do try to stay in somewhat acceptable shape; currently, I do so by practicing various martial arts.
