Zanzibar - December 2002

(Click on the pictures to enlarge them)

Zanziar... Zanzibar... The name sounded exotic and familiar (from Donald Duck probably!).  I had holidays to spare, Venezuela, the planned destination was ruled out due to the labile situation. Most destinations were sold out in December - but I found a cheap ticket to Zanzibar...

Sailing Dhow

The Architecture of Zanzibar

The Old Fort in Stone Town.

The Gates of Zanzibar.

Old Mosque at Dawn.

New Years Eve!

Anton and Me - eagerly celebrating New Years eve in Stone Town.   By the way, Anton "Hakuna Matata" as we call him, is also known as Anton "Do nothing", or to his friend as Anton "Do absolutely nothing", and... :)  Well, OK, you DID climb a couple of small mountains before I met you.

Swahili Divers

I spend 5 days on Pemba.  In Chake-Chake was the headquarters of Swahili Divers.  On Pemba I found peace of mind.

Diving in the Indian Ocean.  Between the day's dives we always went ashore to a deserted beach.

Captain Mohammed - Swahili Divers' faithful driver.

The Old Missionary Lodge - the Hangout of the Swahili Divers.

The History of Zanzibar

Slaves.

Spice.  The Cinnamon tree.  Anywhere you try to take a bite, you just taste Cinnamon - Amazing.

The People of Zanzibar

Boys on a beach on Pemba.

The woman in the Dalla Dalla.

The colorful clothing of the village people.

On the road again

On the bike again!  Is there a better way to travel?

Well, there are certainly better ways to travel than biking on steep dirt tracks on a very hot day with a 60 kilo boy on your tray.  But in return Ali, who needed a lift, showed Donna and me his village.

Local housing.  Would not stand much of a chance in Norway, but appeared remarkably comfortable on Pemba.

I love the Sea.
