Crossing Croatia with car, from Zagreb in the North - a taste of Central Europe - to Dubrovnkik in the South - with its Medeterrainian Magnificence...

The timeless cities, the greatest nature

Zagreb. A taste of Central Europe, with monumental Vienna-style architecture in its modern part - but with an Balkan style old town to get lost in.

The Coast.  The coastline of Croatia is dotted with islands (here: Hvar).  The clear blue sea separates them from the steep mountainous mainland.

Plitvice national park.

By a stroke of luck, our road from the Zagreb to Split passed straight through Plitvice national park.  It was late in the autumn, and the park it was filled with yellow and red colors and the clearest water you can imagine.  It blew heavily that day, and I fear that visitors coming just a day after us would not be able to see the park in its splendid autumn dress.

Wooden bridges across the green water.

Lunch on the lake's edge.

Long, slim trees stretching towards the sky.

A country filled with history - Cities in the Night

I had never heard of Split before I came to Croatia, but on the map it looked like a convenient place to stop.  We arrived in the evening, had a long, good dinner.  On the way back towards the hotel we passed the old city centre, at that time completely empty with people.  Suddenly it was like being on a stage!  A stage beautifully representing the old roman empire in all its glory.  But it was no stage, it was La Notte In Spalato.

Dubrovnik, a city filled with old history as well as more recent, darker history.  Today it has been totally restored after the shelling of the nineties.  Also here the feeling of walking around in the night was remarkable (Mas; you still owe me 100 after failing to run the stairs of the old town because you did not want to embarras yourself in front of the "person" in the stairways...)

Looking towards our future

The Island of Korcula.  The birthplace of Marco Polo.
