In May 2002 I caught a "last-minute" offer and a very spontainous one-week journey to Brazil. I went there alone, but luckily "bumped" into Stefan, a good friend, and his Brazilian girlfriend in Rio. It is a small world...
The plane landed in Sao Paolo. I spend a day and a night there before heading on for Rio de Janerio.

Rio de Janerio is filled with Favelas, or Shantytowns. Everywere, you'll find these settlements creeping their way up the hillsides - like cities inside the city. They are in many respects a comunity on their own - but a poor and often dangerous one.
